Dear Premier O’Farrell and Minister Smith,

Prison officers have one of the hardest and most dangerous jobs in our community, and every single day they confront the worst people in society. They understand what the reality of being in prison is really all about.

This is why I'm joining the campaign against your government making their job even tougher by introducing a needle exchange program in our jails.

Jails are meant to be about rehabilitation, but this sort of program admits defeats on the war against drugs in our prisons. It will make it easier for inmates to get their hands on drugs so prisoner officers have to deal with inmates on drugs one minute then withdrawing from them the next.

It's also arming prisoners with a weapon, which they can use against prison guards, or other prisoners. This means there is a higher chance of prison officers being infected with infectious diseases that could lead to death. We've already had this happen once in NSW, we don't want it to happen again.

This is not acceptable. We want safer jails and safer working conditions for our prison officers.

They deserve better, and our government should be working towards making their job easier not putting them at greater risk.

I say NO to needles in our jails.
