Hey, Did you hear about this? Last Sunday night under the cover of darkness, the Department of Corrective Services trucked around 107 prisoners out of Cessnock jail. Staff were stood aside, and when the next shift arrived in the morning they found themselves locked out. When they were finally allowed in, they found evidence of a shambolic late night raid, including missing paperwork on the whereabouts of prisoners. This is a clear move to downsize and prepare the prisons for privatisation. Yes, the NSW Government has announced it plans to privatise two of the State's prisons - Cessnock and Parklea. The Government also wants to privatise vital prison functions across the state, including prisoner transport and court security. The time to raise our voice against privatisation is now. Giving our prisons to corporations will guarantee increases in costs, lack of scrutiny and transparency and increased risks for the prisoners and the surrounding communities.
